                         THE CPWSA CARBINE

After years of trial and error, (or what optimists call experience), and a small fortune trying different barrel lengths and twist rates, bullet weights, handguards, comps, triggers, optics, etc., the CPWSA Carbine is the culmination of all the lessons I've learned the hard way.  This carbine will save 3 gun competitors time, money, and frustration in selecting and outfitting a rifle for competition.  It's been built from the ground up as the perfect rifle for competition, and with very minor modifications, for tactical and law enforcement applications as well.  Whether you're a novice 3 gunner, or a competitor with hundreds of major matches under your belt, you'll never outgrow or outperform this rifle.  This carbine offers you the chance to do it right the first time and not spend a fortune.

There will be a very limited number of complete rifles available in various practical competitive, or tactical configurations.  More readily available will be basic or complete uppers that you can simply put on your lower and be ready to go.  The complete carbine weighs only 7 pounds and 3 ounces without an optic, and 8 pounds and 11 ounces with the optic and mount, so it's really light and maneuverable.

Here's more of the details on the offerings:

The heart and soul of the CPWSA Carbine or upper is the barrel, which has been custom built to our specifications.  They are .875" before the gas block and .725" diameter after the gas block;  black phosphate finished, fluted, 16" long, with mid-length gas, 1 in 9 twist, with M4 ramps.  Fluting both before and after the gas block facilitates cooling and reduces weight, and the mid-length gas system softens the recoil impulse more than the standard carbine length gas system.  The 1 in 9 twist rate allows shooters to use standard XM193 or other readily available 55 gr. ball ammunition, yet still stablizes the heavier bullets as well.  You should expect around 1 MOA with either 55 gr. XM193 or 75 gr. Hornady TAP ammo. We like the 16" barrel length because it's short enough (with a comp attached) to be quick and maneuverable in house clearing stages or close, tight quarters and shooting positions, yet long enough to give the velocity needed to flash steel targets at the 400 and 500 yard ranges frequently encountered at major 3 gun competitions.  Click Here to purchase our barrel separately.

We shot a few groups at 100 yards with XM193 and PMC Bronze 55 gr. ammo and got great results even though the barrel had less than 50 rounds through it.  We expect even better accuracy as the barrel breaks in.  We also got a couple of 1.25" groups with 75 gr. Hornady TAP ammo.  Here's a couple 3 shot groups with 55 gr. ammo we fired at 100 yards, and is representative of the performance you can expect:

XM193    PMC Bronze 55 gr.

The carbine features a JP Rifles matched, forged upper and lower receiver.  The lower receiver has CPWSA laser etched in red for brand recognition purposes.  The practical carbine sports a 3.5# CMC flat or curved trigger and the tactical model is available with a 4.5# CMC flat or curved trigger.  Each trigger unit is secured with JP anti walk trigger pins.  A Magpul aluminum trigger guard is standard on all carbines, and an Arredondo oversize mag release is standard on the practical model.  A TI-7 adjustable stock is standard on all models.  I prefer this stock over all others (and I've tried them all) because of the combination of the angular stock design, which allows for the best and most comfortable cheek weld around, and the embedded QD swivel receptacle which makes for the quick and easy addition of a sling when needed.  A Magpul MOE Plus grip completes the lower receiver.

The upper receiver features a rifle length Viking Tactics Extreme Battlerail handguard, logo etched ejection port cover, and Nordic Components tactical compensator.  Available upgrades include SJC Titan or Ops Inc comps, JP Rifles stainless low mass bolt carriers and bolts, and Syrac adjustable gas blocks.  We highly recommend the Syrac adjustable gas block as it will be adjusted by us to soften the recoil impulse as much as possible while still maintaining complete reliability.  The Syrac is the only adjustable block that has defined, repeatable adjustments, with a locking detent to prevent your settings from getting changed accidentally or under recoil.

The Optic:

The optic we recommend for the practical carbine is the Burris MTAC30 in a Burris P.E.P.R. mount.  I've shot major matches with $100 scopes and with $2500 scopes, and the MTAC 30 is my choice in optics for 3 gun competition.  The 1 x 4 power range is perfect for everything from up close house clearing stages to those long range stages you see at all the major matches.  The large outer ring is your aiming reference for up close work and is really quick.  For long range work, the BDC reticle is set up for the readily available XM193 ammo this rifle is built around and shoots most effectively.  The holdover points are dead on for XM193 ammo out to 500 yards.  We haven't had a chance to try the scope at 600 yards yet, but would bet that aiming point is correct as well.  Add the optic, MGM Switchview throw lever, modified scopecoat, and P.E.P.R. mount to your carbine or upper for $500.

The big improvement in the MTAC30 compared to the older TAC30 scope is the improved illumination switch, and most importantly, on the MTAC30, only the adjustment ring, not the whole eyepiece, turns when you change magnification power settings.  These scopes feature 30mm 6061T6 aircraft aluminum tubes, multi-coated lenses for a clear view, and Burris' forever warranty.  Adjustments are 1/2" at 100 yards and feature a steel on steel mechanism with positive, audible, repeatable clicks.  The reticle (shown below) is illuminated and has ten power settings with an off setting in between each power setting.  Documentation is provided with the range of each BDC dot from 100 to 600 yards for all popular 5.56/.223 bullet weights.  This scope is very similar to the Burris XTR but has a less congested reticle and is about half the price.  The MTAC30 has glass that rivals scopes costing two to three times it's price.  The mount is designed at the right height for a full field of view and proper eye relief on the AR platform.  It comes with two sets of top ring caps.  One is the standard plain top cap and the second set has pictanny rails on them as shown in the picture above.  You can opt for the standard top cap if you want a streamlined look, or you can use the pictanny rail top caps if you ever want to mount additional accessories on the ring caps.  Click Here to purchase the scope/mount/lever/scopecoat package separately.
